The Pitfalls of Using ChatGPT as your Therapist….written by ChatGPT
Artificial intelligence is changing the way we access information, support, and even emotional guidance. Tools like ChatGPT can provide quick responses, helpful frameworks, and a sense of immediate interaction.
But when it comes to therapy, there are important limitations worth understanding.
While AI can be informative, it is not a replacement for a trained, relational therapist. Here’s why.
1. Therapy Is a Relationship — Not Just Advice
At the heart of effective counselling is a real, human relationship.
Research consistently shows that the therapeutic alliance — the quality of connection between therapist and client — is one of the strongest predictors of positive outcomes.
A therapist:
Notices subtle emotional shifts
Responds to tone, body language, and silence
Holds complexity and contradiction
Adjusts in real time
AI generates responses based on patterns in language. It does not feel, attune, or genuinely relate.
And healing often happens in relationship — not just in information.
2. No Accountability or Clinical Responsibility
A registered counsellor or psychologist:
Is bound by ethical frameworks
Has supervision and ongoing training
Holds legal and professional responsibility
Knows how to assess risk and respond to crisis
AI does not assess risk in the same nuanced way a clinician can. It cannot hold responsibility for safety planning, duty of care, or safeguarding vulnerable clients.
When someone is dealing with trauma, suicidality, addiction, domestic violence, or complex mental health issues, human clinical judgement is essential.
3. AI Cannot Truly Understand You
ChatGPT can provide thoughtful responses — but it does not know your history, attachment patterns, trauma responses, or nervous system reactions.
It doesn’t:
Notice when you deflect with humour
Gently challenge avoidance
Sit with you in silence
Track patterns across months of work
Therapy is not just about what is said — it’s about what happens between two people in the room.
4. Emotional Safety Requires Human Presence
For many people, particularly those with attachment wounds, relational trauma, or abandonment fears, healing comes from experiencing:
Consistency
Attunement
Repair after rupture
Safe emotional holding
An AI response may be reassuring — but it cannot provide embodied presence.
Nervous systems co-regulate through human connection, not algorithms.
5. The Risk of Over-Reliance
Because AI is immediate and available 24/7, it can become a substitute for:
Reaching out to real supports
Tolerating emotional discomfort
Doing deeper relational work
Information is helpful. But transformation requires more than insight — it requires lived emotional experience.
Where AI Can Be Helpful
This doesn’t mean AI has no place.
It can:
Provide psychoeducation
Offer journaling prompts
Suggest coping strategies
Help organise thoughts before a session
But it works best as a supplement — not a substitute — for real therapy.
Therapy Is More Than Answers
Therapy is about:
Being seen
Being understood
Being challenged safely
Learning to regulate in relationship
Experiencing new relational patterns
That cannot be automated.
If you’re struggling, curious about your patterns, or wanting deeper connection in your life, working with a qualified counsellor offers something technology cannot — human presence, accountability, and care.
Healing happens in relationship.
And you deserve one that’s real.
is life balance achievable?
is life balance achievable? we believe it is…
There is an argument that I unsubscribed to a long time ago, that life balance cannot be achieved. I stopped believing in this point of view because I went after obtaining this lofty goal, and found it.
During Covid organisations were forced into the position of letting their employees work from home and for the first time in most peoples life they started to see that a work/life balance was possible. Whether it was spending less time commuting, getting some household chores done that were usually saved until the weekend, or just getting to spend extra time with family, Hybrid working has shown a healthier balance between work and life is achievable. But what about the rest of life? I am talking about the balance between career/business, family, relationships, finance, recreation/hobbies, health, personal growth, friends, and even spirituality. It seems like a lot to juggle but here at better we believe the balance is achievable.
The best way to start out is to understand where you are at right now. I have attached better’s wheel of life as a free resource for you to have. It should give you a good indication of your current balance and highlight which areas in your world need some work. We believe we can help you achieve the balance you are after. Download and fill out the wheel and get it contact with us via our website to find out how we can help.
